Say Bye to Pigmentation!

Can all the ladies of all time, please chant together… “We HATE pigmentation”!

If you have hormones, spent a lot of time in the sun or have a genetic history of pigmentation, chances are, you have suffered from pigmentation. I am one such lucky receiver, my culprit – HORMONES!

Yup, those pesky female hormones caused my pigmentation, or in my case it is called Melasma. Melasma is the general term given to hormone-induced excess pigmentation. It can be caused by hormonal fluctuations, so it’s quite common when taking birth control hormones like the "Pill"; it can also happen during pregnancy, when it is called pregnancy mask, butterfly mask or chloasma; and it's common after menopause, when the sun damage of your youth becomes visible as age spots.

So, there I was, a few years ago, with brown circles starting to form under my eyes and around my lips. Pregnancy also came along and said ‘hey, being nauseous and having insomnia whilst feeling like an elephant is not enough, I’m also going to throw in some pigments here and there!’

I might sound like I’m exaggerating, but being a woman makes us so much more sensitive and attentive to what’s going on with our skin. It’s just how we are wired. And being someone who does not like make-up or wearing base, it was a BIG problem, because who wants to leave the house with brown circles around their eyes?

And that’s when my journey to try and “fix” my problem, started. And I have tried EVERYTHING… expensive creams, chemical peels, micro-needling, microdermabrasion and even prayer 😉! Some treatments helped for a while, the peels & needling seem to have made it lighter, but it always flared back up again. One thing you need to accept with hormonal pigmentation, is that it will stick with you forever. There is no quick fix, it’s a life long maintenance program basically. The trick is to find the right combination of “maintenance”.

Thankfully I stumbled across Dermology who had a treatment called BBL - Broadband light. Forever Young BBL™ technology utilizes the power of phototherapy to deliver amazing results in photo rejuvenation. How it works is, your therapist selects the appropriate wavelength or filter, which will then be able to treat a broad range of skin conditions caused by skin ageing, sun damage and hormones.

I went for my first treatment a few weeks ago and they start by putting on a numbing cream, yay no pain! After 20 minutes the treatment starts and it is really quick, they treated my whole face in a matter of minutes. You can see the red light (laser) but you do have glasses on, and you can feel a small type of pinch as the laser moves into different areas. But it is not painful and if you have had needling or peels done before, this is a piece of cake.

Obviously having tried everything on the market. I am always apprehensive of a new treatment. I’m sure many of you have been promised all types of results and blah blah blah. It’s ok to question treatments and ask, ‘but what does this REALLY do for my skin?’.

I asked many questions and Dermology was patient with me and answered all my concerns.

Q: What makes THIS treatment different from all the others?

A: The light energy delivered by the BBL will gently heat up the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to generate new collagen. This photo rejuvenation will help restore your skin to its natural beauty by smoothing out an uneven skin tone, removing dark spots and stimulating collagen. In addition, the photo thermal energy will target and eliminate many of the broken veins that cause redness and the unwanted melanin responsible for pigmentation and an uneven skin tone.

Q: Which areas can be treated and how many treatments will I need? (because budget!)

A: Sun damage and pigmentation can be treated on any area of the body. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of the sun. The most popular treatments are for the dark spots and veins on the face, neck, back of the hands, chest and shoulders. From two to five treatments, at two to four week intervals will produce the desired results to treat your pigmentation. You may benefit from additional IPL or BBL treatments depending on the severity of your sun damage or pigmentation.

Q: Is there any down time, will I look like Frankenmonster afterwards? (I still need to go to meetings etc.)

A: You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented lesions you will see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Your treated skin will feel smoother, fine wrinkles and pores will be less noticeable and sun spots, dark spots and uneven pigmentation will fade. BBL is non-invasive and a gentle procedure with virtually no recovery time. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply make-up, and resume most of your activities right away.

Then it was time to put these answers to the test. Right after the treatment my face just felt tight, like I had a bit of a sunburn. This did fade within a few hours and with the recovery cream you receive, it really lessons the redness and tightness. The next day my pigment was dark, much darker! But this is a good thing, it means your pigment is lifting, ready to evacuate your face – yes please, you can go now! For the next week it looked like small coffee granules on my pigmented areas. On day 7 this was gone, and I was pleasantly surprised by how LIGHT my pigment has gotten.

My next treatment was in two weeks’ time from my first treatment. It was even easier this time round. My skin also recovered much quicker the second time after treatment. Fast forward two weeks later and after JUST TWO TREATMENTS, my pigment was barely visible. My poor husband who has endured many moaning sessions about said skin, was the first to say – “where is your pigmentation?”. This from a guy who did not notice that I went from blonde to brunette!

It’s safe to say that I was really chuffed and impressed by BBL. My skin felt smoother, more vibrant and have a more youthful appearance overall. Someone at the gym even commented on my ‘glowing’ skin– I had NO make up on! Some of my fine lines even disappeared. I only needed two treatments and then was recommended creams specific to my skin type and problem areas. Now I just use my maintenance products. If my pigmentation flares up again, I will go back for another BBL treatment or one of their pigmentation peels. This they will discuss with you, depending on your specific problem areas.

BEFORE: No make up or base on pigmentation.

AFTER: Applied products and pase.

Below is my skincare routine. I am currently using the Optiphi Active Range that I was gifted. I am really enjoying this range and the results. I start by applying Intense HA Infinity Serum or the Intense Retinol Infinity Serum, followed by the Moisture Control Moisteriser. Lastly I apply my sunblock which is either the tinted Heliocare Color gel cream or my Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation. I also use Dermaquest Brightening cream/moisteriser to lighten my pigmentation, as well as a special spot cream recommended by Dermology. And Voila!
